The Nissan Leaf offered early adopters zero-emission driving at an affordable price well before Tesla became a household name. The segment has grown considerably since the original model hit the streets, and it’s going to get even bigger in the coming years as electric vehicles continue merging into the mainstream lane. The company hopes the brand-new, second-generation, 2018 Nissan Leaf will return to the top of its class — and make our list of the best electric cars. What can it do?While you may not think that electric vehicles can hold their own against traditional gas guzzlers, an older version of the Nissan Leaf recently completed a Mongol rally, which is fairly strong evidence that they can. The competition (against yourself, really) of sorts begins in England and ends in Ulam Ude in Russia after passing through, you guessed it, Mongolia. It’s a 10,000 mile journey, and one that a Nissan Leaf just completed.Nissan Leaf owners Chris and Julie Ramsey recently … [Read more...] about Everything we know about the 2018 Nissan Leaf, from its range to its price
The launch of a new flagship sedan is a monumentally important moment for a car company. It represents what the brand is capable of in terms of both tech and design, and it introduces the features that will trickle down to smaller, less expensive cars in the coming years. With that said, the industry’s eyes are set on Audi as it introduces the fourth generation of the A8. Here’s everything you need to know about it.What does it look like? The next-generation A8 moves Audi’s design language in a new direction. It’s still recognizable as an A8 — there are no drastic changes to report — but it borrows a handful of styling cues from the Prologue concept (pictured above). Note the sharper headlights, the more chiseled sheet metal, and a wider, flatter rendition of Audi’s ubiquitous Singleframe grille. Out back, it gets horizontal tail lamps connected by a thin light bar. It stands out with a more coupe-like silhouette than before, … [Read more...] about From design to tech, the next-gen A8 signals the dawn of a new era for Audi
Let's focus in on two major pillars of proper and successful data center transformation (DCT) projects and some proven methods that have aided productive and cost-efficient projects to reshape and modernize enterprise data centers.Specific trends are buttressing the need for DCT. It's important to fully understand the current state of an organization's IT landscape and data center composition in order to then properly chart a strategy for transformation. However, there are pitfalls that can be avoided by balancing long-term goals with short-term flexibility. The key is to know how to constantly evaluate based on metrics and to reassess execution plans as DCT projects unfold. This avoids being too rigidly aligned with long-term plans and roadmaps and potentially losing sight of how actual progress is being made -- or not. This is the first in a series of podcasts on DCT best practices and is presented in conjunction with a complementary video series. With us now to explain why DCT makes … [Read more...] about PODCAST Limbering Up for a Data Center Makeover
The image above is among the most prolific speculative art about the future of virtual reality. Drawn by Eran Folio, it shows a young man ensconced in his VR headset, surrounded by peeling walls, wearing shabby clothes, living an existence that suggests little else matters but his virtual world. With luck, none of us will live like this anytime soon. Still, there’s a lot to learn from the image. Notice, for example, that the room is completely empty. It’s impossible to say when the necessary innovation will happen. Perhaps a clever engineer will find a way next year — or perhaps it will take a decade. The young man in the picture doesn’t need any furniture, since he has everything he needs in the virtual world. That’s meant as a metaphorical statement on gaming, consumption and modern society. Yet it also has bearing on reality. One day we will all work in virtual offices, and watch TV through VR … [Read more...] about Does the rise of virtual reality means kissing your guest room goodbye?
LTE Advanced is the next major step in the evolution of our LTE networks. That means better coverage, greater stability, and faster performance. And it’s not just a little faster.LTE Advanced is a lot fasterThis table gives you an at-a-glance idea of how the likely speed ranges compare. Virtually no one objects to the concept of adopting laws and policies to stem the tide of child pornography proliferating on the Internet. So, the announcement on Tuesday that Verizon, Time Warner Cable and Sprint Nextel have agreed to block access to Web sites that harbor such content was uniformly welcomed -- even if the end result will be to keep just a small percentage of child pornography offline. The Internet service providers will confront daunting technical and legal issues as they attempt to execute on their commitment. Depending on how a monitoring system is configured, it's very likely there will be either a large number of false positives or false negatives. That is, access to permissible adult content may be blocked, or access to child porn generated by computer-savvy producers may be allowed. The biggest obstacle to successful implementation, however, could be a challenge based on First Amendment grounds. Although he considers it unlikely, such a challenge is possible, said … [Read more...] about Do ISPs Stand a Chance Against Child Pornographers?
While Apple is known for fantastic product design, it's not known for customization. For instance, the first iPhone hit the world nearly eight years ago, and yet our "customizable" home screen options are limited to the organization of app icons and some wallpaper choices that can produce color tints through translucent layers. With this in mind, all of us future Apple Watch owners likely will have to settle for a handful of Apple-developed watch faces. I've been curious about this for months, hoping that Apple would let third-party designers rethink how to show time through watch faces. My concern was that Apple simply would not allow custom watch faces. Now Daring Fireball's longtime Apple watcher John Gruber has showered all sorts of cold water over the notion of custom faces. After taking a look at numerous watch faces available for Android Wear -- as well as thinking through the issue, certainly -- Gruber reached the conclusion that Apple will not allow rampant development of … [Read more...] about OPINION Take Your Apple Watch Face and Love It!
