ROME — Bishop Robert Barron of Winona-Rochester has blasted a new Minnesota abortion law as “morally outrageous” and “the worst kind of barbarism.” In a video posted on social media, Bishop Barron described the bill signed this week by Democrat Gov. Tim Walz as “the most radical abortion law in the country” while calling on Americans to “stand against this barbarism.” Friends, there is a morally outrageous bill that has now been signed into law by @GovTimWalz . Dwarf Fortress financials mark fairytale ending for indie developer
In a nutshell: Various tech giants like Meta, Google, Amazon, and Apple posted negative quarterly and annual statements this week. Amidst the corporate gloom, it's nice to see financials that tell a hopeful story for a small company, especially one behind a game as popular as Dwarf Fortress. A month after the first commercial release of Dwarf Fortress, the game's developer revealed this week that it earned $7.23 million in sales. According to Bay 12 Games' comparison, the number eclipses returns from the previous four months by two decimal points. In each of the months between September and December 2022, Bay 12 Games brought in around $15,000, most of it likely from Patreon donations. After offering the immensely popular Dwarf Fortress exclusively as freeware for 16 years, the company released the first commercial version on December 6, and a few weeks later posted the astronomical January increase. In a post on the Bay 12 forums, the developers say almost half of the money … [Read more...] about Dwarf Fortress financials mark fairytale ending for indie developer
Insiders say Sony slashed PlayStation VR2 production; Sony says, “No we didn’t”
Rumor mill: Word on the street is that Sony's PS VR2 pre-orders were disappointing. As such, insiders say the company is allegedly cutting back production. The two million units it expected to sell in the first quarter of 2023 are now projected to take until March 2024 to move. However, Sony says these reports are false, and everything is on track. With Sony's PS VR2 only three weeks from release, Bloomberg reports that the company has cut shipments of the next-gen VR headset in half due to low pre-orders. The company previously estimated it would ship at least two million units in its launch quarter. However, anonymous sources say those sales are now projected at one million. Sony expects another 1.5 million units to ship between April this year and March 2024. Bloomberg reached out to Sony for official comment, but a spokesperson said, "the company does not discuss its product inventory." However, shortly after publishing the story, Sony told GamesIndustry.biz that it had not … [Read more...] about Insiders say Sony slashed PlayStation VR2 production; Sony says, “No we didn’t”

This new Overwatch 2 map may be awful for Mei but it’s great for us
Audio player loading… It’s no secret that the big addition in Overwatch 2 Season 3 would be a map. Blizzard made clear that each season would bring with it a big piece of content, alternating between a new hero and a new map. Last season brought Ramattra, so a map was on the menu for Season 3. However, in an interview with Blizzard's dev team, we found out some exciting details buried within this icy tundra. The new mode, named Antarctica Peninsula, can be found on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, closest to the southernmost part of South America. Here, the Overwatch 2 hero Mei, a climatologist, set out to research the effects of global warming on the ice caps. As this is a control mode, we’re getting not one but three separate maps. This style of objective capture is a best-of-three round-based mode where the goal is to achieve control of the target area and hold it until your team’s score ticks up to 100%. We will be traveling to the Ice Breaker ship, which … [Read more...] about This new Overwatch 2 map may be awful for Mei but it’s great for us
The horses in Dragon Age were lying to you
Audio player loading… The creative director of Dragon Age, John Epler, has revealed that the game’s horses have been lying to us the entire time, thanks to the magic of creative thinking and camera angles. In the lead-up to Dragon Age 4 , more and more gems have been dropping about the beloved action RPG game Dragon Age Inquisition . In a Twitter post (opens in new tab) , Epler dropped some hard truths about how sprinting on a horse didn’t actually make you go faster. In reality, the game engine BioWare used to develop Dragon Age Inquisition called Frostbite “couldn’t stream in levels fast enough,” Epler said. This meant that the team was forced to change the camera angle and add speed lines when you started sprinting on your horse to make you feel as if you were faster. Engine failure This isn’t the only time Frostbite failed the dev team. According to a [report] by Kotaku, the engine was the bane of many devs' existence. “Frostbite is like an … [Read more...] about The horses in Dragon Age were lying to you

Formula 1 just can't seem to keep American car companies away. Last month, we were stunned by the news that Cadillac wants to enter F1 with the Andretti team , which is seeking an entry into the sport. While that bid remains in doubt , here's one that isn't: Today, the Ford Motor Company revealed it will be back in F1 starting in 2026, when the new engine rules come into effect . "This is the start of a thrilling new chapter in Ford's motorsports story that began when my great-grandfather won a race that helped launch our company," said Bill Ford, executive chair of Ford. "Ford is returning to the pinnacle of the sport, bringing Ford’s long tradition of innovation, sustainability, and electrification to one of the world’s most visible stages.” Ford's first foray into F1 began in 1967 when Colin Chapman, the head of Lotus, persuaded Ford to pay for the development of a new racing engine that would be a stressed part of the F1 chassis.
