Minnesota Bishop Robert Barron Slams ‘Barbaric’ Abortion Law

February 3, 2023 by www.breitbart.com Leave a Comment

ROME — Bishop Robert Barron of Winona-Rochester has blasted a new Minnesota abortion law as “morally outrageous” and “the worst kind of barbarism.” In a video posted on social media, Bishop Barron described the bill signed this week by Democrat Gov. Tim Walz as “the most radical abortion law in the country” while calling on Americans to “stand against this barbarism.” Friends, there is a morally outrageous bill that has now been signed into law by @GovTimWalz . This bill is the most radical abortion law in the country. We must continue to stand against this barbarism. Pray for the conversion of hearts and minds. pic.twitter.com/9A2CI3Xq5w — Bishop Robert Barron (@BishopBarron) February 1, 2023 The law, whose full title is the Protect Reproductive Options (PRO) Act, establishes abortion up to birth for any reason as “a fundamental right” in Minnesota. “Every individual who becomes pregnant has a fundamental right to continue the pregnancy and give birth, or … [Read more...] about Minnesota Bishop Robert Barron Slams ‘Barbaric’ Abortion Law

Tracking and combatting our current mass extinction

July 25, 2014 by arstechnica.com Leave a Comment

At various times in its past, the Earth has succeeded in killing off most of its inhabitants. Although the impact that killed the non-avian dinosaurs and many other species gets most of the attention, the majority of the mass extinctions we're aware of were driven by geological processes and the changes in climate that they triggered. Unfortunately, based on the current rate at which animals are vanishing for good, we're currently in the midst of another mass extinction, this one driven by a single species: humans. (And many of the extinctions occurred before we started getting serious about messing with the climate.) This week's edition of Science contains a series of articles tracking the pace of the extinction and examining our initial efforts to contain it. Extinction and “defaunation” Estimating the total number of animal species is a challenging task, but numbers range from roughly five to 10 million. Of those, we seem to be exterminating about 10,000 to 60,000 every … [Read more...] about Tracking and combatting our current mass extinction

I watched Rian Johnson’s Poker Face on Peacock – and it’s nothing like Knives Out

Audio player loading… It's no secret that Peacock is the black sheep of the streaming family. While the likes of Netflix and Disney Plus possess extensive and excellent back catalogs, Peacock's lack of top-tier originals has seen audiences shun it in favor of its more popular cousins. Now, though, NBC Universal's streamer has a truly fantastic TV show to rival its peers: Poker Face . The brainchild of Rian Johnson ( Knives Out , Star Wars ), Poker Face is an sensationally good comedy detective series that'll do more than fill the Knives Out -shaped void in your life . In fact, I'd go as far to say it's the best Peacock show of all-time – and one that'll convince you to finally sign up for the service. The truth is out there Poker Face stars Natasha Lyonne ( Russian Doll ) as Charlie Cale, a drifter who possesses the seemingly supernatural ability to detect lies. Or, in Cale's catchphrase-like terms, when a person "bullshits" her. When … [Read more...] about I watched Rian Johnson’s Poker Face on Peacock – and it’s nothing like Knives Out

February 3, 2023 by www.techradar.com Leave a Comment

Audio player loading… Google has been under growing pressure from ChatGPT and Microsoft in the past few months, and it seems to have finally snapped – the search giant has announced an AI-themed event for February 8, and said its chatbot rival will launch very soon. The 'Google presents: Live from Paris' (opens in new tab) event will be livestreamed at 8.30am ET / 1.30pm GMT (which works out as 12.30 AEST for those in Australia). And Google says the theme will be "reimagining how people search for, explore and interact with information", through "Search, Maps and beyond". While that description doesn't specifically reference the kind of AI chatbot technology we've seen from ChatGPT, the event tallies with some bold statements made by Google CEO Sundar Pichai during the company's recent earnings call (opens in new tab) . On the call, Pichai said that "AI is the most profound technology we are working on today" and that AI is reaching an "inflection point". … [Read more...] about Google is ready to take on ChatGPT – and we’ll see its AI masterplan any day now

February 2, 2023 by www.techradar.com Leave a Comment

For those hoping to give Disney Plus a trial run before departing with your hard-earned dollars, for the most part your happy ending ends here. The official 7-day Disney Plus free trial quickly came to an end after its initial launches around the world, with no countries currently offering any kind of trial period. As it stands, for those looking to get a taste of of Walt Disney Studios wealth of content, you'll have to pay for the privilege. Still want to subscribe Disney Plus? Sign up now! (opens in new tab) However, all is not lost. Disney Plus revealed a whopping $1.1 billion in losses in August 2022, so something might need to be tweaked over at Mouse HQ to bring in new subscribers. A reintroduction of a trial period isn't completely off the cards, then. While it appears as though a Disney Plus free trial has disappeared to a land far, far away, there are still a few ways you can get one - namely if you happen to be in the market for a new phone contract.
