In brief: A foldable iPad is set to arrive earlier than anticipated according to one noted Apple analyst. TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said in a series of tweets that there might not be a new iPad released in the next 9-12 months. Apple's iPad mini refresh is likely to enter mass production in the first quarter of 2024, he added. Should this scenario come to fruition, it wouldn't be surprising to see year-over-year iPad shipments decline by up to 15 percent. The 2023 iPad drought would pave the way for an all-new model sporting a foldable design to debut sometime next year. Kuo isn't the first to speak on the subject of a foldable iPad, but other predictions have it scheduled to arrive in 2025 or beyond. (5/5) — 郭明錤 (Ming-Chi Kuo) (@mingchikuo) January 30, 2023 Kuo said he is positive about the foldable iPad landing in 2024, and has heard that it will feature a carbon fiber kickstand from Chinese manufacturer Anjie Technology. Apple Q1 earnings miss the mark almost across the board
Apple reported its earnings for Q1 2023 today, and it was one of the company's poorest-performing quarters in recent years. It was the company's biggest decline since 2016 and the first since 2019. Overall revenue was down more than 5 percent year-over-year as the company failed to match sales from the same quarter last year across most of its hardware categories. iPhone revenue was $65.78 billion for the quarter, down 8.17 percent year over year. Similarly, "Other Products"—which includes the Watch, AirPods, and some other outliers—was down 8.3 percent year over year at $13.48 billion. The real underperformer was the Mac, which was down almost 30 percent at $7.74 billion. Further Reading Apple CEO Tim Cook to take 40% pay cut this year The two parts of the business that did grow were services— which include things like Apple Music and TV+, iCloud, and AppleCare—and the iPad. Services were up 6.4 percent at $20.77 billion, while the iPad grew 29.66 percent to $9.4 … [Read more...] about Apple Q1 earnings miss the mark almost across the board
Apple’s Pandemic Boom for iPhone and Mac Sales Hit a Snag
The tech industry was already large before the COVID-19 pandemic began upending lives around the world three years ago. But it continued to grow, as we all became ever more reliant on our smartphones, computers and videoconference calls. Now Apple is the latest tech giant to signal that this period of growth may be coming to an end. The company reported that sales of its most important product, the iPhone, fell more than 8%, to nearly $65.8 billion. The reason, Apple said, included several factors, such as the fluctuating price of the US dollar across the world and especially strong sales of its products in the prior year. But the real crunch came from COVID-19 shutdowns late last year across the Chinese manufacturing centers Apple relies on . The results led to protests in China , and supply shortages for Apple's iPhones, in particular its $999 iPhone 14 Pro series. Apple CEO Tim Cook said many of those manufacturing problems have been resolved, for now. All told, … [Read more...] about Apple’s Pandemic Boom for iPhone and Mac Sales Hit a Snag
Here’s Why You Should Buy the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra
Samsung unveiled the new Galaxy S23 range in February 2023, with the Galaxy S23 Ultra being the most premium phone in the lineup. However, it has received criticism because, well, it basically looks like a Galaxy S22 Ultra. If you ask me, though, that’s a good thing. Here’s why. Galaxy Ultra S23 vs. Galaxy Ultra S22: What’s New? Let’s dive into what is different. Samsung technically got started with the Ultra range in 2019, when it launched the Galaxy S10 5G. Although it didn’t have the Ultra name back then, it had the same premise — a bigger, premium, souped-up version of the Galaxy S10 and S10+. The first proper Ultra phone came about in 2020, with the Galaxy S20 Ultra. From there, we had two entries — the Galaxy S21 Ultra and the Galaxy S22 Ultra . Both revisions came with design changes as Samsung was trying to justify the existence of this lineup. The S22 Ultra gave the lineup some sense as Samsung decided to give it several traits from the recently deceased … [Read more...] about Here’s Why You Should Buy the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra
Three Potentially Risky Ways to Save a Lot on Textbooks
You can always save money on textbooks by buying online, going ebook , or renting what you need. But there are riskier ways to save a buck that just may yield even greater payoff, such as getting the international or earlier edition of the text, or avoiding the purchase altogether. You already know that the textbook system is a scam. Publishers often crank out new editions without making substantial changes. Schools follow standard procedure over saving students money. And sometimes a class hardly uses the textbook at all. If getting that perfect A is what you’re aiming for, it’s safer to play by the rules and buy your the required edition. However, if you just need to pass, are taking the class for fun, or are really that stripped for cash, consider the alternatives. And keep in mind that none of these alternatives come without some risk involved. The Risky Route to Obtaining Your Textbooks Before you invest time or money in any alternative to buying straight from the … [Read more...] about Three Potentially Risky Ways to Save a Lot on Textbooks

After Mass Layoffs, Zuckerberg Says Meta Focused on ‘Efficiency’
Facebook parent Meta had a rough 2022. The social media giant laid off thousands of workers , reported its first revenue drop and saw a decline in daily active users on Facebook . Now Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg says the company is focusing heavily on efficiency in 2023 as it continues to invest in the metaverse and artificial intelligence. For the last 18 years, the social network has grown rapidly, but it's entering a new phase, Zuckerberg said. "It's very hard to really crank on efficiency while you're growing that quickly and I just think we're in a different environment now," he said during a call with analysts on Wednesday after Meta reported better-than-expected revenue in the fourth quarter. If the company becomes more efficient, he said, Meta will be able to do better product work and become a more fun place to work because employees will get more done. The focus shows how Meta is responding to economic uncertainty as advertisers pull back spending. Meta has … [Read more...] about After Mass Layoffs, Zuckerberg Says Meta Focused on ‘Efficiency’
