HBO Max, Paramount Plus join Netflix in frustrating 2023 TV show cancellation spree
Audio player loading… Update: Paramount has responded to TechRadar's request for comment about its Paramount Plus and Showtime merger. In the US, Paramount Plus ' premium tier will be rebranded to "Paramount Plus with Showtime". The merger will take place later this year – Paramount declined to provide an exact date – and will give customers "a more compelling offering" of content. Paramount says the move "is a natural next step" in its revamped strategy to become a singular, multiplatform, IP-driven company. As for UK and Australian audiences, Paramount confirmed no changes will be made to its current Paramount Plus subscription plans. Showtime is already integrated into Paramount Plus (as an extra channel) in non-US territories. On the topic of show cancellations and removals from its streaming platform, Paramount president and CEO Chris McCarthy explained – in an employee memo seen by TechRadar – the reasons behind these decisions. "As a part of Paramount … [Read more...] about HBO Max, Paramount Plus join Netflix in frustrating 2023 TV show cancellation spree
Tracking and combatting our current mass extinction
At various times in its past, the Earth has succeeded in killing off most of its inhabitants. Although the impact that killed the non-avian dinosaurs and many other species gets most of the attention, the majority of the mass extinctions we're aware of were driven by geological processes and the changes in climate that they triggered. Unfortunately, based on the current rate at which animals are vanishing for good, we're currently in the midst of another mass extinction, this one driven by a single species: humans. (And many of the extinctions occurred before we started getting serious about messing with the climate.) This week's edition of Science contains a series of articles tracking the pace of the extinction and examining our initial efforts to contain it. Extinction and “defaunation” Estimating the total number of animal species is a challenging task, but numbers range from roughly five to 10 million. Of those, we seem to be exterminating about 10,000 to 60,000 every … [Read more...] about Tracking and combatting our current mass extinction

Samsung is going hard on QD-OLED TVs, which is good news for cheaper models in the future
Audio player loading… Samsung Display looks to be going all in on QD-OLED displays, after it was revealed that the manufacturer is set to increase its production of panels featuring the tech by a massive 50%. According to think tank UBI Research (via OLED-info ), Samsung Display will be increasing the number of QD-OLED panels it produces from 30,000 monthly units currently to 45,000 in 2024. This is in stark contrast to LG Display, which makes the traditional OLED panel found in practically all the best OLED TVs available today, which was reported to have halted investment in production improvements in 2023 . This means that it's likely that the prices of traditional OLED TVs are set to freeze, opening up an opportunity for the more-expensive QD-OLED tech to drop its price faster, and to start catching up in market share. Samsung Display also ceased manufacturing LCD panels for TVs in June last year, freeing up production capacity for QD-OLED screens. … [Read more...] about Samsung is going hard on QD-OLED TVs, which is good news for cheaper models in the future
I watched Rian Johnson’s Poker Face on Peacock – and it’s nothing like Knives Out
Audio player loading… It's no secret that Peacock is the black sheep of the streaming family. While the likes of Netflix and Disney Plus possess extensive and excellent back catalogs, Peacock's lack of top-tier originals has seen audiences shun it in favor of its more popular cousins. Now, though, NBC Universal's streamer has a truly fantastic TV show to rival its peers: Poker Face . The brainchild of Rian Johnson ( Knives Out , Star Wars ), Poker Face is an sensationally good comedy detective series that'll do more than fill the Knives Out -shaped void in your life . In fact, I'd go as far to say it's the best Peacock show of all-time – and one that'll convince you to finally sign up for the service. The truth is out there Poker Face stars Natasha Lyonne ( Russian Doll ) as Charlie Cale, a drifter who possesses the seemingly supernatural ability to detect lies. Or, in Cale's catchphrase-like terms, when a person "bullshits" her. When … [Read more...] about I watched Rian Johnson’s Poker Face on Peacock – and it’s nothing like Knives Out
This Google Ads campaign pushes malware that your antivirus can’t pick up
Audio player loading… Cybersecurity researchers have spotted a new advertising campaign on the Google Ads network which pushes malware onto unsuspecting victims’ endpoints . What makes this malvertising campaign different from others is the fact that the malware being distributed is almost impossible for today’s antivirus solutions to pick up. The threat actors made it work by building code that can only be understood by virtual machines. If the victims run the malware , the virtual machine can translate the code back to its original code and run the malicious executive. The researchers, from from SentinelLabs, explain the MO: "Virtualization frameworks such as KoiVM obfuscate executables by replacing the original code, such as NET Common Intermediate Language (CIL) instructions, with virtualized code that only the virtualization framework understands.” Delivering Formbook "A virtual machine engine executes the virtualized code by translating it into the … [Read more...] about This Google Ads campaign pushes malware that your antivirus can’t pick up
