The big picture: InSight's dual solar panels, each measuring about seven feet wide, provide the requisite power for the lander. Unfortunately, the panels have accumulated enough dust to severely impact efficiency. When InSight first landed, its panels were able to generate about 5,000 watt-hours each Martian day. The dust-covered panels are now only able to produce roughly 500 watt-hours per sol. NASA's InSight lander is on pace to end science operations this summer and become fully inoperable by December. InSight, short for Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport, launched from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California on May 5, 2018, and touched down on the Red Planet less than nine months later. The lander was designed to detect seismic activity on the rocky planet. To date, InSight has detected more than 1,300 marsquakes – the most recent being a magnitude 5 quake that occurred on May 4 . (This spectrogram shows the largest … [Read more...] about Dust-covered solar panels force NASA to end Mars InSight lander mission

Elon Musk’s latest stunt: calling on the SEC to investigate Twitter’s user numbers
So does Elon Musk want to buy Twitter or not? This morning, the company’s prospective new owner insisted (in a tweet, of course) that the $44 billion deal he’d agreed to “ cannot move forward ” until he sees the proof he’s looking for about its active user numbers. With needling current Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal and texting former CEO Jack Dorsey having failed to hit the spot, Musk — seemingly jokingly — pulled in another recurring character from his 24 / 7 revolving circus by tweeting to the US Securities and Exchange Commission, asking them to investigate. In case you’ve forgotten, the folks at the SEC are the “ bastards ” that Musk has previously accused of infringing upon his rights to free speech, although that’s not the only thing he’s called them in the past. SEC, three letter acronym, middle word is Elon’s — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) July 2, 2020 His quarrel with them has focused on their attempts to enforce a consent decree he agreed to in 2018 over the … [Read more...] about Elon Musk’s latest stunt: calling on the SEC to investigate Twitter’s user numbers
Over half of US properties face at least some wildfire risk
More than half of all homes, 56 percent, in the contiguous 48 states face at least some wildfire risk in the next few decades, according to a first-of-its-kind report published today by the nonprofit research organization First Street Foundation. First Street gave each address in the continental US a rating between one to 10, with one representing close to no risk and 10 representing a 36 percent or more likelihood that a property could be caught up in a wildfire sometime during the next three decades. More than 20 million properties across the continental US are threatened by at least “moderate” wildfire risk. Those homes have up to a 6 percent chance of being in a blaze at some point over a 30-year timespan, the typical timeframe for a home mortgage. Even a 1 percent chance of being in a wildfire is worth taking seriously. In comparison, the federal government considers an area with a 1 percent chance of flooding in a given year as a “ Special Flood Hazard Area ” on … [Read more...] about Over half of US properties face at least some wildfire risk
Report: Teachers Union Urges Members to Not Post Spring Break Pics

Teachers Union Leader Resists Schools Reopening from Island Vacation
A leader of the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) wants kids to remain out of the classroom because schools are “unsafe,” but she made the claims in the midst of a sunny vacation in Puerto Rico. Sarah Chambers, who WGN said is on the union’s executive board and an area vice president and claimed she “led four strikes,” is opposed to schools returning to in-person learning on Monday. Chambers made several posts on Twitter this week attacking the plan. “Just a few hours earlier, Chambers posted a picture on Instagram that appears to show her pool side in Puerto Rico and talking about going to Old San Juan for seafood,” WGN reported. In a post on Instagram — on an account that has now been made private — Chambers wrote, “Spending the last day of 2020 by the poolside. We have the whole pool to ourselves. Then, we are going to old San Juan to get some yummy seafood mofongo.” On Twitter, Chambers identified herself as a “socialist.” “We have an entire private Airbnb house to … [Read more...] about Teachers Union Leader Resists Schools Reopening from Island Vacation
Shkreli released from prison to halfway house after serving <5 of 7 years
Infamous ex-pharmaceutical executive Martin Shkreli has been released from federal prison after serving less than five years of a seven-year sentence for a securities and wire fraud conviction. He is now moving into a US Bureau of Prisons halfway house at an undisclosed location in New York until September 14, 2022. Shkreli was convicted in August 2017 on two counts of securities fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit securities fraud in connection to what federal prosecutors called a Ponzi-like scheme involving two hedge funds Shkreli managed. In March 2018, a federal judge sentenced him to seven years, which he was serving in minimum security federal prison in Allenwood, Pennsylvania. His early release—slightly more than four years after his sentencing—reflects time shaved off for good behavior in prison, plus completion of education and rehabilitation programs, according to CNBC . It also includes a credit for the roughly six months he spent in jail prior to his … [Read more...] about Shkreli released from prison to halfway house after serving <5 of 7 years
Texas social media law will cause “chaos” online, Supreme Court is told
More than two dozen groups have urged the US Supreme Court to block a Texas law that prohibits large social media companies from moderating content based on a user's "viewpoint." The Texas law, HB20 , "results in blatant violations of the First Amendment rights of platform providers," said a Supreme Court brief filed yesterday . The law taking effect means that "chaos will ensue online with disastrous and irreparable consequences," the brief said, continuing: With platforms unable to effectively moderate scammers, messages preying on vulnerable populations, including the elderly, will proliferate online. The uptick of this content will predictably result in yet more people being tricked into sending money to scammers or disclosing financial information, leading to identity theft and financial ruin. Platforms will be powerless to regulate speech praising terrorists and those who engage in murderous campaigns, with horrendous potential ramifications if even a single person … [Read more...] about Texas social media law will cause “chaos” online, Supreme Court is told
Data: New Jersey Voter Rolls Have 2.4K Registrants 105 Years Old or Older
Nearly 2,400 registrants listed on New Jersey’s voter rolls are 105 years old or older, according to a review of data by the Public Interest Legal Foundation (PILF). In data reviewed and published last month, PILF researchers state that they discovered 2,398 registrants listed on New Jersey voter rolls having dates of birth in 1917 or years prior, suggesting that they would be 105 years old or older. “Given that the most recent average life expectancy data show to be 80.7 years in the state, the thousands of registrants aged well beyond 100 years deserve closer examination,” PILF researchers wrote. In addition, PILF researchers state that they have found 8,239 duplicate registrations on New Jersey’s voter rolls — including 61 triplicate registrations, seven quadruplicate registrations, three pentuplicate registrations, and one sextuplicate registration. That data has spurred PILF to file a lawsuit against New Jersey Secretary of State Tahesha Way, whom they allege is … [Read more...] about Data: New Jersey Voter Rolls Have 2.4K Registrants 105 Years Old or Older
Marc Elias Testifies at Sussmann Trial He Had ‘Discretion’ to ‘Direct’ Fusion GPS
Marc Elias, a key Democratic Party election attorney partly responsible for arranging the fraudulent “Russia dossier” in 2016, took the stand Wednesday in the trial of former Hillary Clinton campaign lawyer Michael Sussmann. Sussmann faces charges of lying to the FBI when he allegedly hid the fact that he was working for the campaign when he told the FBI’s Peter Baker about a conspiracy theory tying then-candidate Donald Trump to Russia via Alfa Bank. The theory was soon discredited. The prosecution is the most important thus far for Special Counsel John H. Durham’s investigation into the origins of the Russia collusion hoax. Elias is a key witness, who was called to the stand by prosecutors to provide evidence showing that Sussmann was, in fact, working for the campaign. As Breitbart News previously reported : Elias remains one of the most important election lawyers for the party, pushing to overturn ballot integrity laws, challenging results in close races, and suing … [Read more...] about Marc Elias Testifies at Sussmann Trial He Had ‘Discretion’ to ‘Direct’ Fusion GPS
