Secret Santa drops gold coin into Salvation Army kettle
Sarah Rahal The Detroit News Published 5:47 PM EST Dec 6, 2018 St. Clair Shores — A secret Santa has been dropping more than just spare change into Michigan Salvation Army red kettles for the past six years. While bringing the kettles in for the day on Wednesday night, a Salvation Army official noticed a shiny gold coin wrapped up in a dollar bill. "As we were going through the kettle, we noticed someone had wrapped the coin in a $1 bill and slipped it in without it being noticed," said Major Candace Voeller, a Corps Officer for the Salvation Army in Warren. "We knew immediately what it was because we’ve been fortunate enough to receive six of these in the past." The 1980 South African gold Krugerrand was dropped into the kettle Wednesday at a Kroger in St. Clair Shores. The coin, valued at $1,300, will help the Metro Detroit campaign reach its $8.2 million goal this year, Voeller said. Since 2013, the mysterious … [Read more...] about Secret Santa drops gold coin into Salvation Army kettle
Construction Crew Finds Stash of Ancient Gold Coins in Abandoned Italian Cinema
About 300 gold coins, dating back around 1,500 years to a time when part of the Roman Empire was collapsing, have been discovered during construction at an abandoned cinema in Como, in northern Italy, the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities said in a series of statements. All of the coins were found inside the remains of an amphora, a type of storage jar that the Romans often used to transport liquids such as wine and olive oil. After the cinema construction crew discovered the hoard, a team of archaeologists from the ministry excavated the coins and brought them to a lab in Milan, where they are in the process of being examined and conserved said the ministry in one of the Italian language statements. Coin hoards have been found at many sites throughout the ancient Mediterranean, including a 1,500-year-old hoard found at the Greek city of Corinth. However, hoards containing an abundance of gold coins are rare, and the ministry called the new find an … [Read more...] about Construction Crew Finds Stash of Ancient Gold Coins in Abandoned Italian Cinema

Intriguing Gold Coin and Other Treasures Uncovered in Egypt
Archaeologists in Egypt have unearthed the remains of a huge, red, brick building — likely the remnants of a Roman bath — as well as a mountain of treasures, including a statue of a ram and a gold coin featuring King Ptolemy III, according to the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities. The building itself is huge — for Roman times, anyway — measuring about 52 feet (16 meters) long, or nearly as long as a bowling lane. The structure likely dates to the Greco-Roman era, Ayman Ashmawy, head of ancient Egyptian antiquities, said in a statement released May 23. The artifacts the archaeological team uncovered at the site of San El-Hagar, in Tanis, include pottery vessels, terra-cotta statues, bronze tools, a stone fragment engraved with hieroglyphs and a small ram statue. [In Photos: Ancient Egyptian Tombs Decorated with Creatures] The gold coin, in particular, caught the archaeologists' attention. It features King Ptolemy III and was created during the 221 B.C. to 205 … [Read more...] about Intriguing Gold Coin and Other Treasures Uncovered in Egypt
