The 165-foot-tall (50 m) Starship will launch from Earth atop a gigantic rocket known as Super Heavy, which will be powered by about 30 Raptors of its own. The Starship vehicle will be powerful enough to blast itself off the moon and Mars, whose gravitational pulls are much weaker than that of our planet, Musk has said. … [Read more...] about SpaceX gearing up for 12-mile-high test flight with prototype of Mars-colonizing Starship

That was my thinking when I decided to try out RocketSkates, an upcoming product from Acton that cleared $550,000 in Kickstarter funding over the summer. While they aren't actually propelled by rockets, the motorized and battery-powered skates will scoot you along at speeds of about 12 miles per hour, and creator Peter Treadway has high hopes that they'll compete with skateboards, bikes, regular skates, and plain old feet as a form of urban transit. We met with Treadway earlier this week to talk about the skates and to take them for a test run. … [Read more...] about Feet-on with RocketSkates, which are exactly what they sound like
The discovery of the Amazon Congo see-saw could be useful as a forecasting tool, Eltahir told LiveScience. "Like any new understanding of natural variability, these findings have implications regarding climate variability and climate forecasting and prediction in the tropics," he said. … [Read more...] about Seesaw Climate: Drought Here Means Flood There
"When the California 'high speed' rail was approved, I was quite disappointed, as I know many others were too," Musk wrote in a blog post today about the Hyperloop project. "How could it be that the home of Silicon Valley and [the Jet Propulsion Laboratory] — doing incredible things like indexing all the world's knowledge and putting rovers on Mars — would build a bullet train that is both one of the most expensive per mile and one of the slowest in the world?" … [Read more...] about Can Elon Musk’s Superfast ‘Hyperloop’ Transit System Really Be Built?
Musk unveiled his vision for the Hyperloop transportation system online today (Aug. 12), saying that it could rocket passenger-packed pods through long tubes at 760 mph or so (1,220 km/h) using energy derived from the sun. The technology could cut the Los Angeles-San Francisco travel time to 30 minutes and would be ideal for such medium-distance jaunts, said Musk, who heads the private spaceflight company SpaceX and the electric-car firm Tesla. … [Read more...] about Hyperloop Unveiled: Billionaire Elon Musk Reveals Wild Idea for Superfast Travel
