Meta’s Reality Labs lost $14 billion last year

February 2, 2023 by www.techspot.com Leave a Comment

The big picture: Mark Zuckerberg's Metaverse ambitions continue to look like a money pit, costing Meta tens of billions of dollars over the last two years. The company's 2022 year-end financial statements compound prior heavy losses from Reality Labs, but Meta's leadership remains committed to the venture. Meta's financial statements for Q4 2022 show that its VR division's losses increased compared to its serious money burn from prior quarters in the year. However, that didn't stop Meta's stocks from experiencing one of their best days. Reality Labs hemorrhaged $4.3 billion in Q4 2022. Including the $3.7 billion burnt in Q3, the $3 billion sunk in Q2, and the $2.96 billion thrown away in Q1, Meta's Metaverse division losses for 2022 total $13.7 billion. That number follows the $10.2 billion Reality Labs lost throughout 2021. As the costs mounted last year, CEO Mark Zuckerberg maintained that the company's efforts would pay off in the next decade and that thinking hasn't … [Read more...] about Meta’s Reality Labs lost $14 billion last year

After 16 years of freeware,

February 2, 2023 by arstechnica.com Leave a Comment

The month before Dwarf Fortress was released on Steam (and Itch.io ), the brothers Zach and Tarn Adams made $15,635 in revenue, mostly from donations for their 16-year freeware project. The month after the game's commercial debut, they made $7,230,123, or 462 times that amount. "The fairytale ending is reality, but you didn't kiss the toad," Zach Adams wrote on Bay 12 Games' forums . "You gave him money." He went on to write the kind of grateful response to fans you don't often see from game developers: The appreciation you give us is part of our being now. It carries us in the cars we drive. It sustains us as the food that we eat. There is now no longer any existence except the one that you have provided. When we pass from this world, you will be the reason we are remembered. Tarn Adams noted that "a little less than half will go to taxes," and that other people and expenses must be paid. But enough of it will reach the brothers themselves that "we've solved the main … [Read more...] about After 16 years of freeware,

Senate Intel. Chair Warner: ‘My Patience Is Running Thin’ with Biden over TikTok, The Review’s Lasted over Two Years

February 3, 2023 by www.breitbart.com Leave a Comment

On Thursday’s broadcast of the Fox Business Network’s “Claman Countdown,” Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) stated that his “patience is running thin” with the Biden administration and TikTok and noted that the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) has been reviewing TikTok for two years. Warner said, “I’ve been raising concerns about TikTok for months, and let’s go into the two concerns I have: One, the amount of data that TikTok is collecting — since so many of our users are our kids — on our kids that that data resides in China. And even though TikTok has said that’s not the case, there have been constant examples where it has been proven that Chinese engineers are still getting access to that data. The second piece is frankly, Liz, more concerning to me…the algorithms that drive what you see very much [are] controlled by the TikTok leadership. And my concern since every company in China now has to owe its first allegiance, not … [Read more...] about Senate Intel. icra: 5G rollouts on in select pockets but backhaul infra to cost Rs 3 lakh crores over 4-5 years: ICRA

January 30, 2023 by www.gadgetsnow.com Leave a Comment

Telecom players have started rolling out 5G services in select pockets but backhaul infrastructure will cost Rs 3 lakh crore over the next 4-5 years, according to ICRA . ICRA noted consistent "healthy improvement" in the operating metrics of telcos but added that debt levels continue to remain high and were around Rs 6.3 lakh crore as of March 31, 2023. The full scale 5G deployment across the country will entail densification of the network and thereby sizeable investments in fiberisation, it contended. "India currently has around 35 per cent of its towers fiberised and the rating agency expects that the capex required to fiberise the adequate number of towers to provide a sturdy network base would be close to Rs 3 lakh crore over the next 4-5 years," ICRA said in a statement. Defense contractor confirms it doesn’t discriminate against War Thunder players

January 26, 2023 by www.techspot.com Leave a Comment

In context: Recent shenanigans on the War Thunder forums have made them look like the number-one place to discover military vehicle secrets. The situation, which has been ongoing for several years now, recently led to claims that major defense contractors like Raytheon were asking new hires and referrers if they played the free game, but the company has confirmed the reports aren't true. Posting classified documents about military vehicles on the War Thunder forums is becoming an almost common occurrence. Schematics for the Challenger 2 tank extracted from its Army Equipment Support Publication (AESP) were posted in 2021. There were also leaked documents for the French Leclerc Main Battle Tank and its variants, as well as classified material on Chinese tanks. The War Thunder message boards saw two incidents of restricted military intel posted last week, for the F-16 Fighting Falcon and F-15E US strike fighter, despite the developer's repeated pleas for players not to post such … [Read more...] about Defense contractor confirms it doesn’t discriminate against War Thunder players

Google isn’t moving Legacy G Suite users again, despite admin console warnings

February 3, 2023 by arstechnica.com Leave a Comment

Grandfathered-in "Legacy G Suite" users got a scare recently when another new "transition" message started popping up in the Google Admin console. "The transition to Google Workspace has started," said the new message that suddenly appeared in people's accounts. This was after Legacy G Suite users went through a contentious transition last year, where Google's opening position involved shutting down their accounts if people didn't start paying, but eventually, it was talked into not doing that. A Google spokesperson tells us the Workspace transition message was "a bug that surfaced an old banner from earlier in the process last year, and our team is working on removing it. More changes are not happening at this time, and those who previously opted-in for personal use are not expected to take any further action." We've received a few questions about this message, and this Reddit post has people wondering what the deal is, but it's just a bug. That's great because Legacy G … [Read more...] about Google isn’t moving Legacy G Suite users again, despite admin console warnings
