Impact of reading about climate science goes away almost instantly
For decades, the scientific community has been nearly unanimous: Climate change is real, it's our doing, and its consequences are likely to be severe. Yet even as it gets more difficult to avoid some of its effects, poll after poll shows that the public hasn't gotten the message. There's very little recognition of how strong the scientific consensus is, and there is a lot of uncertainty about whether it's our doing—and none of the polling numbers seem to shift very quickly. Over these same decades, there have been plenty of studies looking at why this might be. Many of them have found ways to shift the opinions of study subjects—methods that have undoubtedly been adopted by communications professionals. Yet the poll numbers have remained stubborn. Misinformation campaigns and political polarization have both been blamed, but the evidence for these factors making a difference is far from clear. A new study offers an additional hint as to why. While polarization and misinformation … [Read more...] about Impact of reading about climate science goes away almost instantly
Ex-Tesla worker who suffered racist abuse rejects $15M award, seeks new trial
A former Tesla worker who won a racial discrimination case against the company has rejected a $15 million payout and will seek a new damages trial. A jury had awarded plaintiff Owen Diaz $137 million in October 2021, but in April, a federal judge reduced the payout to $15 million . In that ruling, US District Judge William Orrick rejected Tesla's claim that it is not liable for the "disturbing" racist abuse suffered by Diaz, who is Black, but found that the jury overreached in its damages calculation. Diaz had the option of accepting or rejecting the lower payout, and he rejected it in a court filing on Tuesday . The case is in US District Court for the Northern District of California. "In rejecting the court's excessive reduction by asking for a new trial, Mr. Diaz is again asking a jury of his peers to evaluate what Tesla did to him and to provide just compensation for the torrent of racist slurs that was directed at him," Diaz's lawyer, Larry Organ, said in a statement … [Read more...] about Ex-Tesla worker who suffered racist abuse rejects $15M award, seeks new trial
New report on how Scott Atlas made herd immunity an unofficial US policy
While one congressional committee seems to be grabbing all the headlines recently, other investigations of the Trump administration have continued in the background. One of them is trying to determine how the US's response to the coronavirus pandemic went so wrong that the country ended up with over a million deaths and one of the worst per-capita death rates in the world. In its own words, the committee's goal is "to ensure the American people receive a full accounting of what went wrong and to determine what corrective steps are necessary to ensure our nation is better prepared for any future public health crisis." In its latest report , released on Tuesday, the committee details the White House career of Scott Atlas, a neuroradiologist with no infectious disease experience. Atlas' hiring by the White House was expected to be so controversial that he was initially instructed to hide his staff ID from the actual government public health experts. Yet he quickly became a driving … [Read more...] about New report on how Scott Atlas made herd immunity an unofficial US policy

Brave’s search engine lets you customize your results
Brave Search has launched a new feature that gives you a way to create or apply custom filters that change the way its results are ranked. It’s called “Goggles,” and it could potentially help uncover sources you might not find right away on traditional search engines like Google. Brave has some demos ready for users to try today , including ones that prioritize posts from smaller tech blogs and filter out posts from the 1,000 most-viewed sites on the web. There’s even a Goggle to exclude posts from Pinterest — because Brave clearly knows the frustration of trying to find an image and getting a Pinterest post with no source. Brave says these Goggles are just for demonstrative purposes, and developers can expand on or fork them. It will start deleting these Goggles once users start coming up with their own, but I’m hoping the Pinterest one sticks around. While Brave says its engine, which is independent from entities like Google and Bing , “doesn’t have editorial biases,” that … [Read more...] about Brave’s search engine lets you customize your results
Professors Have Social Media Meltdowns After Supreme Court Overrules Roe v. Wade
College and university professors had a public meltdown on Twitter in reaction to the U.S. Supreme Court overruling Roe v. Wade on Friday. One Stanford professor declared that women not having the ability to kill their unborn children is “barbaric.” “The Supreme Court decision to strike down Roe v. Wade rushes the nation toward an abyss where we have no civil or human rights,” proclaimed Critical Race Theory proponent and Boston University professor Ibram X. Kendi in a Twitter tirade. When women don’t have the right to make reproductive choices about their own bodies, we lose a foundational right. When we lose foundational rights, all rights are threatened. 2/5 — Ibram X. Kendi (@DrIbram) June 24, 2022 “When women don’t have the right to make reproductive choices about their own bodies, we lose a foundational right,” Kendi added in a follow-up tweet. “When we lose foundational rights, all rights are threatened.” Stanford assistant professor Hakeem Jefferson also … [Read more...] about Professors Have Social Media Meltdowns After Supreme Court Overrules Roe v. PHOTOS: Pro-life Americans Celebrate the Overturning of Roe v. Wade After Nearly 50 Years
Pro-life Americans gathered outside the Supreme Court and throughout Washington, D.C., on Friday to celebrate the Court’s decision in the Dobbs case overruling Roe v. Wade and returning the regulation of abortion “to the people and their elected representatives.” The 5-4 majority opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito states: “Abortion presents a profound moral question. The Constitution does not prohibit the citizens of each State from regulating or prohibiting abortion. Roe and Casey arrogated that authority. We now overrule those decisions and return the authority to the people and their elected representatives.” Today’s ruling reverses the Supreme Court’s 1973 decision in Roe , thus undoing one of the most divisive and unconstitutional legal opinions in American history. The Dobbs decision also represents the culmination of nearly 50 years of grassroots activism among a diverse and increasingly young Pro-Life Movement, as seen in the celebrations outside … [Read more...] about PHOTOS: Pro-life Americans Celebrate the Overturning of Roe v. Trump: Roe v. Wade Will Be Overturned ‘Automatically’ if Elected in 2016
Then-candidate Donald Trump predicted in a 2016 presidential debate with Hillary Clinton that Roe v. Wade would be overturned “automatically” if he were elected. Responding to the moderator, Chris Wallace, Trump said if the ruling was reversed, laws on the legality of abortion would “go back to the individual states” to decide, which was the law of the nation before Roe v. Wade . Wallace pressed Trump again on whether he desired Roe v. Wade to be overturned, Trump responded by saying the case would be overturned if he were elected. “That will happen, automatically in my opinion because I am putting pro-life justices on the Court,” said Trump, if he won the election. Hillary Clinton responded to a similar question by stating that she supports Roe V. Wade . “I strongly support Roe v. Wade, ” she said. “I will defend Roe v. Wade , I will defend a woman’s right to make her own decision.” Trump won the 2016 election and proceeded to nominate three Supreme Court … [Read more...] about Trump: Roe v. Apple’s most exciting upcoming iPads may not be Pro models
The rumors swirling around a 14.1-inch iPad have shifted. Last week, supply chain analyst Ross Young predicted that the potential device would be branded as an iPad Pro and would be equipped with the Mini LED / ProMotion display, like the one found on the current 12.9-inch iPad Pro . Now, however, Young predicts that the 14.1-inch tablet won’t have Mini LED or a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate display, according to a report from MacRumors . On the opposite end of the spectrum, there are also rumors that the entry-level iPad, which currently sells for $329 and features a 10.2-inch screen, will get a big upgrade with modern connectivity and specs. A 14.1-inch iPad without Pro features and cutting-edge screen tech does seem a bit confusing at first — wouldn’t power users want the biggest screen and all the high-end features? — but the move does make some sense. Apple recently announced a new multitasking feature for iPadOS , called Stage Manager, that’ll be coming later this … [Read more...] about Apple’s most exciting upcoming iPads may not be Pro models
