Authorities in Jackson County, Alabama, said Jeremiah Adam Nix, 32, is charged in the death of Candus Bowes, who was found with a gunshot wound lying on the front porch of their home on Poplar Street in the town of Hollywood, Jackson County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Rocky Harnen said Tuesday. The call first came in as a self-inflicted shooting, Harnen said, "but after our investigators got there, they determined that it was a homicide and arrested the boyfriend." "They'd been living together for a long time," Harnen said. Officers seized a small-caliber handgun believed to be the weapon used in killing the Jackson County mother, Harnen said. Hamilton County Schools' overall graduation rate for the 2018-19 school year remained steady but trailed the state's with about 86.9% of the system's students graduating high school within four years. The Tennessee Department of Education released district and school graduation rates for 2018-19 school year unexpectedly Monday, with the state overall reaching its highest graduation rate on record at 89.7%. "Earning a diploma is the first step toward economic self-sufficiency," Hamilton County Schools Superintendent Bryan Johnson said in a news release. "Especially if the diploma represents a high-value set of skills that will prepare a graduate for success after high school." Three Hamilton County high schools saw a 100% graduation rate: Chattanooga High Center for Creative Arts, Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences Upper School and Lookout Valley Middle/High School. Officials in Bledsoe County, Tennessee, are mulling the idea of privatizing the county's ambulance service by contracting with Georgia-based Puckett Emergency Medical Services. The company will give a presentation to the Bledsoe County Commission Sept. 16 in Pikeville. Officials also expect to receive data from the county service to allow for comparisons. Bledsoe now has two ambulances on duty 24 hours a day every day with at least one additional ambulance available for on-call duty when the need arises, according to officials. But Bledsoe's county-owned operation has averaged a loss of more than $150,000 annually, tallying a total loss of more than $1 million between fiscal years 2012-13 and 2018-19, Bledsoe County Mayor Gregg Ridley said.
