NEW DELHI: China-owned social media app TikTok distanced itself from Beijing after India banned 59 Chinese apps in the country, according to a correspondence seen by Reuters. In a letter to the Indian government dated June 28th and seen by Reuters, TikTok CEO Kevin Mayer said the Chinese government has never requested user data nor would the company turn it over if asked. TikTok, along with 58 other Chinese apps, including Tencent Holdings LTD's WeChat and Alibaba Group Holding Ltd's UC Browser, were banned in India this week following a border clash with China. "I can confirm that the Chinese government has never made a request to us for the TikTok data of Indian users," Mayer wrote, adding that data for Indian users is stored in servers in Singapore. "If we do ever receive such a request in the future, we would not comply." India this week outlawed 59 Chinese-owned apps including TikTok and Tencent's WeChat, in what was described as a "digital strike" against China by the country's technology minister. The move followed a confrontation between India and China at a disputed Himalayan border site, which left 20 Indian soldiers dead. Ride hailing platform Uber has shut down its Mumbai office as part of its restructuring efforts, but it will continue to provide services in the city, according to sources. The company's services in the city, however, would remain unaffected. When contacted, an Uber spokesperson said, "Uber continues to provide a high level of service to all its riders in Mumbai". The sources said the decision to close the Mumbai office was part of the global restructuring exercise. in May, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshai had written to employees informing them of the decision to close 45 offices globally. One of the persons said many of the employees are expected to continue working from home to support the services as is being done currently in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.
