The latest report by research firm Strategy Analytics revealed that the education sector this year saw the dominance of Chromebooks. The easy to use Chrome OS saw 174 per cent YoY quarterly growth in Q1, 2021. Asus also realised the potential of the Chrome OS and the company introduced a new Chromebook at a competitive price. The Asus Chromebook Flip C214 is a convertible laptop that comes with a price tag of Rs 23,999. The 2-in-1 laptop comes with a decent set of specifications and also promises to cater to all your schooling and daily needs. We used the laptop for some time to help you decide whether you should invest in it or not. Here’s the complete review of the Asus Chromebook Flip C214.
The all-new Asus Chromebook Flip C214 is a ruggedized convertible laptop that is designed to meet all the rigorous demands of educational users. The ergonomically designed laptop comes with a compact form factor and is constructed to withstand everyday knocks, bumps and rough handling. Created for students the laptop weighs 1.2 kilos and it is surrounded by a rubber strip on all sides which adds an extra layer of protection. The 2-in-1 is made entirely of plastic and it complies with military-grade standards. As it is a convertible you can flip it completely and can also use it in tablet mode. The display is not coated with a layer of protective glass, so just be careful before using it. The laptop houses two cameras — one HD cam at the top and a 5MP camera located on the base. The flap of the laptop has a scratch-resistant micro-dimple surface texture which offers an elegant look to the device and also offers a firm grip. You will also notice two grills at the corners which are being used by the bottom-firing speakers. The right side of the laptop houses the power button, volume rockers and the USB Type C port. The left side is home to a USB Type C port, 3.5mm audio jack and a microSD card slot.
Coming to the keyboard, the Asus Chromebook Flip C214 does not come with a backlit keyboard, this means that you will not be able to use the device in a dark room. The keyboard on the convertible is certified to be spill-resistant against up to 66cc of liquid. The gap between the edges of the keycaps and the keyboard surround is reduced to prevent anyone from prying the keys out. The keyboard of the Chromebook is mounted on light steel plates that resist physical pressure which may damage the hardware inside. There is no Numpad on the keyboard and there are no extra keys on the keyboard. The convertible has a compact trackpad and the clicks are integrated below it. During our testing, the trackpad functioned well and it registers clicks quite fast.
Asus Chromebook Flip C214 comes with an 11.6-inch touchscreen display with 1366×768 pixel resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio. The display on the convertible features 178-degree wide-view technology and an anti-glare coating. The anti-glare coating on the Chromebook makes sure that you never experience glare in any manner. You also do not face any issue with the display while using the laptop under direct sunlight. The screen is also protected with thick bezels on all sides. The low resolution of the display also saves a lot of battery. The colour contrast and sharpness levels are also fine and the viewing angles are also good. The videos don’t look washed out or smudgy.
Asus Chromebook Flip 214 is powered by an Intel Celeron dual-core processor paired with 4GB of RAM. The convertible offers up to 64GB internal storage which can be expanded up to 2TB by installing a microSD card. Designed for students and routine tasks, the convertible works smoothly. Not to forget that it’s a Chromebook and it comes with Chrome OS and not Windows.
For starters, Chrome OS is the operating system by Google which is mostly based on the Chrome browser. The idea of this operating system is to enable users to work on cloud-based services and keep the device free from installing multiple services and software. You just need a working internet connection and the device will work without any hassle. The Chrome OS is lighter in comparison to Windows and macOS, this means that you need very high specifications to run a Chromebook.
The interface is clean and you will not get any bloatware on the laptop. It comes with Google’s suite apps which are integrated within the OS. You can also download any Android app on the device from the Google Play Store. The Asus Chromebook Flip C214 worked without any lag during our testing. It functioned smoothly and managed all the routine tasks well. You can also use the convertible for casual gaming but don’t expect a lot from it when it comes to intense gaming.
The device also works well in tablet mode and the UI is also quite snappy. In all the Chromebook performs very well and you will not have any complaints.
Asus Chromebook Flip C214 is capable of offering up to 11 hours of battery backup on a single charge. The laptop is backed by a 46Wh battery and during our testing, the battery lasted a day on a single charge after mixed usage. Another interesting thing is that the laptop offers a USB Type C charging port. This means that you can easily charge the laptop using your smartphone charger and you don't have to carry a charger separately. The convertible charged pretty fast as compared to the other laptops in the same price segment.
Asus Chromebook Flip C214 comes with a price tag of Rs 23,999 which makes it an ideal deal for students and for people who want a laptop for routine tasks. The hassle-free Chrome OS and the smooth performance of the device make it a good choice. The integration with Android OS and the ability to use the Chromebook as a tablet works as an added advantage. In our opinion, Asus Chromebook Flip C214 is a good choice if you are looking for a laptop under the budget of Rs 25,000.
