Biden ally Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh has also been asked to attend the UFCW union rally set for 2 p.m. The rally is “in support of these workers and their fight for a better life,” reads UFCW’s website. More than 30,000 UFCW Stop & Shop workers have been on strike since April 11. They say the company proposed a “unreasonable” contract, and is cutting benefits. The company says its proposal includes across-the-board raises and health and pension benefits better than most food retailers. Full-time store clerk salaries start at an average hourly rate of $15.90, according to Stop & Shop’s website. On Tuesday, Stop & Shop’s company account tweeted, “Stop&Shop deeply appreciates the valuable role our associates play in creating a great experience for you. They are a part of your lives, a part of our community and key to our success. That’s why it is so important to us to continue to provide a fair contract for the associates that work in our stores.” Biden has been topping many 2020 Democratic presidential polls, but also has faced mounting criticism for being too touchy with women in public venues.
