A Texas icon has died at the age of 87.

James Cavender, founder of the Cavender’s western wear store, died on Tuesday.

“Countless stories of James R. Cavender have been filling our inboxes since this morning. Stories of his humility, hard work and integrity: ‘his handshake was better than any legal document,’ as one put it best,” Cavender’s said of its founder in a Facebook post on Tuesday.

James Cavender, the founder of the popular western wear outfitting and cowboy boots store Cavender’s, couldn’t walk the stage when he graduated in 1953 from Oklahoma A&M.

Cavender was born on March 22, 1931. The Texas entrepreneur opened his first store called the Dairy Hart in Pittsburg, Texas in 1957, according to the company’s website. Eight years later, Cavender opened his first clothing store. More than 40 years later, Cavender’s expanded to more than 50 stores spanning Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and other western and southern states.

“From deep-rooted relationships, to moments in passing, to some employees who never met him, he made an impact on every soul who had the pleasure,” the post reads. “Never one for the spotlight, no – hard work was always his motivation and end goal. His work ethic is seeped into the heart of Cavender’s as a company and a family.”

The Facebook page RattayCavenders also shared their condolences on the passing of the Texas business man.
